Research Project: Carbon corrosion in PEM fuel cells
Research Summary: Corrosion leads to
collapse of the essential porous microstructure in PEM fuel cell
cathodes. We seek to optimize focused ion beam tomography as a
high-throughput screening method for observing microstructural cathode
changes in response to carbon corrosion. Tomography data are used as
geometries in next-generation modeling and simulations to better
understand and characterize transport in the cathode over a lifetime of
operational use.
